What’s better than baked goods? Baked goods that your neighbor made for you! The brand new Mellifluous Portland here in Maine does exactly that: treats made from a local with love (owner Meg started baking as a way to connect to those she cared for that were no longer geographically close). Wondering what Mellifluous is? It’s an adjective that means “filled with something that sweetens.” And that’s exactly what did for the Yelp Elite Squad during this suddenly very snowy, bitterly cold winter!

The almond cake was the standout of the two for me – amazing almond flavor, moist, dense, and perfect to eat by hand, by whatever sized slice you feel up to! I didn’t put any jelly or butter or anything on mine – plain was great as is. One of the best almond cakes I’ve ever been lucky to try – I can picture ordering again when company is coming or just for a treat. Looking at the website, I think prices are excellent for food quality and I like that Meg is trying to reduce packaging waste in Portland and sourcing ingredients as sustainably/locally as she can.

My family tried the sour cream coffee cake and sourdough bagels. The coffee cake is spongy and flavorful, it’s got a really enjoyable light crust to it. This would make a good item to bring to a dinner party or even as a gift. I took a slice, warmed it up for about 20 seconds in the microwave, then slathered it with butter. So good! I could even see this pairing well with vanilla ice cream… I liked the pink paper used to wrap the coffee cake in, it showed the food was made with care. It was a nice replacement for other common packing methods.

“I remember shopping for my mom’s first Kitchenaid stand mixer with her and my grandma before my grandparents moved across the country from us. After the move my mom took up baking as a hobby (coping mechanism). My passion for baking didn’t begin ‘til the end of my college career when I was living in Atlanta for an internship — I started making banana bread, cookies, etc. to bring into work and to ease my own anxieties of being away from loved ones. After moving to Portland in 2020, with my mom’s Kitchenaid in hand, I began baking for people in my life any chance I could get. There is something that makes my soul feel warm by nourishing those around me — even more so when I can source my ingredients in a mindful and less impactful way. I am a frequent at the Portland Food Co-op and want to bring the concept of package-free food shopping off the Portland peninsula. Cheers! Meg.”
